Review #9 already! Yes! Baked Glue's comic is a fairly new one compared to the other's I have written about, but it's still in a wonderfully original category of it's own. It is ongoing, I am happy to be caught up on the story so far.
Right off the back, I have to saw what has interested me in the start before I read this comic was Baked Glue's art style. As a traditional artist I have always been impressed with digital art. But I feel their character designs, backgrounds, effects (in the magical sense related to the story like the glows from the orb and lights in general) will blow you out of the water right away. The way we read their dialog is also such a fun and original way compared to standard comics. You can pretty much hear it as you read, at least that is my experience. The colors are crisp and in a sense emotional that they really help set the mood the story goes for. Little detail's like painted nails and the way one's fabric for their clothes are against their body doesn't go unnoticed. I feel the time and effort put into the art alone just goes to show you their talent and passion for this story. The pacing feels perfect, too. You have pages where little actions are happening without words and it feels right as with how it feels in real life. This story isn't rushed at all and that is another reason it is enjoyable.
So we start off the story with Haruhi Mizutani! A very strong and smart person who loves to get more knowledge from exploring realm after realm. She is able to do this by using the orb of dinari, it grants her some incredible and special abilities. (As a side note I am curious where she has gone so far and what sort of knowledge she has to date.) But this one fateful night, her dinari (which she uses to peer into the demension) fails her and she trespasses into the dimension of this truly terrifying hellish fiend! Now she is in one of the worst case situations you could think up, having to save all of her loved ones within a set amount of time - which feels unfair and almost hopeless. If it wasn't for her strong will and brave attitude going forward, I feel so many other main characters would have trouble pulling off what she takes on. You can't help but admire and root for her at the same time.
As I read more of Haruhi, I felt more connected to her huge problem she must solve. I started off liking her for a few reasons, but by the time I got caught up with the story where it is now I not only want her to get through all of this without any of her loved ones hurt or lost - but I want the best for her as a character. The struggle of what she goes through is a complete nightmare and beyond scary and Baked Glue certainly pulls it off well with his story telling! It's almost nail biting as you see her in different situations that could backfire in an instant and all you want to see is Haruhi come out in the end fine! I recommend this comic to any of you who want to try something new, scary, exciting, beautiful and fresh all wrapped up in one excellent read. I don't think you'll regret it!
