Thoughts on Digimon Tri Adventure movies
Feb. 27th, 2024 05:31 pmOver the last few months I was able to watch the Digimon Tri adventure movies with Mike and I thought I'd talk about those for a bit. **** They will have spoilers - so you have been warned! ****
As a teenager I fell in love with the Digimon T.V. show. I was a typical kid/teen during the 90's and early 2000's when it came to the ever popular love of the new anime/manga experience! Sadly my first taste of it was the American dubbed version. It wasn't horrible, but looking back they could have embraced more of the Japanese culture it came from. But I feel a-lot of people feel this way, so I don't think I need to elaborate.
In my heart I liked the digimon show better than pokemon because I felt like it was more exciting, the characters more likable as well as the art and the storyline just kept me engaged with each episode. But anyway, on to my thoughts about the movies...
What I liked:
They were made to celebrate the 15th year anniversary of the franchise. It's a 6 year time skip for everyone, our characters that we first met as kids now older teenagers. Most of their personalities were very similar to when they were kids, which I liked since I always felt they had a well constructed group.
There was a bit of a crush between Izzy and Mimi, which was different and fun. I always sort of thought Joe and Mimi may get together someday, but he already has a girlfriend - that we never get to meet and the group makes fun of him for. But I liked it for the first few movies. It's a shame it sort of died out. I'm always a sucker for a good romance or crush situation and as a teen I always wondered who they would end up with.
When the digimon were digivolving the art and music were enjoyable. They got put in these eggs and them came out of them. I can't give it the justice it deserves, but it was a step up from the older show that I was used to.
I like that the main characters have different viewpoints about doing the whole "digimon thing" again. Like Joe is freaked out by this all and doesn't want anything to do with it again. He's focused on his studies. Which in all honesty seems like a normal reaction for some. And I'm glad they kept at least one character different than all the others who just jumped right back in without a blink.
The animation was beautiful. I really enjoyed it in all the movies. The fights were well done, especially some of the ones at the end. And the backgrounds stood out from when we got to see them in the digital world to the real world.
What I disliked:
I felt like the digimon themselves were very much baby-like and very much obsessed with food and eating. To the point almost every word out of their mouths is about stuffing their mouths. And I get they are mostly child-like. But it got sort of annoying after awhile. From what I remember as a teen watching the show, I felt like they grew and developed over a short period of time - being quick and smart learners. But maybe they did this just to be cute?
The back and forth fighting between Matt and Tai got old pretty quick. I know these two have such a strong history of being against each other - it's what they were basically remembered for from the show I feel like! But I was hoping as they grew up they would outgrown this behavior. I feel like it takes away from more important things.
In my opinion, I thought Meiko was just sort of eh... I get it, they needed her and Meicoomon there for plot. But she just seemed whiney, uncomfortable and just there. The group takes her in no issue at all which is sweet. And towards like the last 5 minutes of the last movie I feel better and more positive about her. But it took many hours for me to feel this way.
The two characters Maki and Daigo were sort of weird. There were scenes were I just felt like they weren't needed or just shouldn't be there. They are part of the National Data Processing Bureau, so I get they are important. But to be included with teenagers when they go to a hot springs inn to stay for example. It just felt uncomfortable. I wish they would have talked about their pasts more, they were two of the original digidestined. They had this weird old love tension which also just felt forced.
I wish they would have shown the other digidestined. Davis, Cody, Yolei and Ken would have been great to see! They teased us at the end, with them being trapped in the digital world and Tai and Daigo saving them. And we got to hear about them, but nothing else. They were pretty enjoyable and I think a-lot of other fans would have enjoyed to see them, too. Even just for a few minutes.
So that's about that for my thoughts. Overall I liked them. There were some things I would have changed, but I feel like that can be normal with so many movies done in this sort of style. If you haven't seen them yet and are a digimon fan, I recommend checking them out.
