I have read some of Spellodello's works before and as I was going through her comic fury profile this one caught me by surprise. It may only be 18 pages long, but this short web comic has much to offer to it's readers. It is a comic about growth, we get to meet a young maple seed who is trying to find her place in this giant world to lay down her roots. As I read it I felt a ping of innocence, when as a child I saw these seeds falling towards the ground and it was their given name - Helicopters! And here I am as an adult, reading a short web comic about one that touched my heart.
This little helicopter has so much energy, spirt and joy for her future. It was both exciting and inspiring to read and wonder where she would end up, what fate would have in store for her along her journey. She runs into a few threats and it truly makes you think about nature and the outdoors as a whole. How all plants have started from a simple seed. I love the style Spellodello illustrated for her. It's creative with her hair being the seed itself, or at least that is how I viewed it.
The artwork is detailed, as can be expected. I think my favorite takeaway from the art is how we get to experience this story first hand from her perspective. The world is such a large, vast and scary place and we see it first hand in this short story. And the ending was emotional but in a good, hopeful way. What a wonderful, creative short.
So if you are looking for a pleasant, change of pace 18 page beautiful and insightful comic I highly recommend Helicopter! I don't think you will be disappointed.
