#40 Grape Ape's "Nocturne 21" review!

This highly popular and well known comic deserves all of the attention and praise it has gotten since it came out in the world of Comic Fury. Grape Art is always outdoing themselves with the art, writing and ability to hook us in. I really struggle to find so many positive words to describe this comic series. She has been working at this amazing gem of a series for over 20 years. That alone is impressive! True dedication and passion are filled throughout the pages of "Nocturne 21"!
I do have to give you all a heads up before you start this series if you do have a weak stomach. There is a good amount of blood, some self-harm, violence, dark mental health related issues, some very personal inner dark thoughts, realistic nightmares.... "Nocturne 21" is extremely dark and shouldn't be taken lightly. But with saying that, it is also one of the web comics on Comic Fury that has made me feel deeply for these characters. It goes without saying that this story will hit some sort of nerve (in the best way possible) with at least a few of you. Emotions run high and the dark mysteries keep getting darker as the story continues on.
The cast is pretty small and I think that works in it's favor. We aren't thrown all of these confusing new characters or a hard to keep up with plot. But just a few and I like that. They all work well together to keep the story going and the writing keeps us on track with being spot on.
Grape Ape's art style has such a powerful message to it. From the character's expressions, body language, to the scenes in which the story unfolds - it's all breathtaking. The style for the characters is a fun mix of a cartoony look but also has a realistic feel, too. I enjoyed how expressive they are illustrated in. Of course the dialogue tells the story as well, but boy do these characters tell the story themselves with how they are responding and reacting to everything. From detailed line work, colors, shading, shadows, sound effects... it all captured me right in!
There are all sorts of heartbreaking things that come up throughout "Nocturne 21" and the characters (mainly Kai!) deal with some horrifying situations to put it simply. As these play out, the art tells it with a great deal of talent and strength. I felt almost like as we learned of Kai's mysterious past we could feel the stress, confusion and fear that he was feeling. And that's all due to Grape Ape's skills as as story teller and artist.
I'm happy to say I am all caught up with it, there is much to binge and enjoy before the next update happens! Give this one a try if you are curious to try something new, dark, emotional, exciting, beautiful and deep...
