"Dead Life" is a wonderfully fascinating comic about a young boy named Hammy, Narcia and a cruel twist of fate that changes everything for them both. It's basically from his point of view, a refreshing way to tell this interesting tale.
What we get when reading "Dead Life" is mystery, suspense, curiosity, bits of humor, some serious heartbreak pulls, likeable characters and a story that will keep you wanting to read more. I'm happily caught up with it and I'm happy to share what I think of this story so far.
ShoobaQueen's art style has many layers to it! There are the cute moments with Hammy, the sad moments when emotions take hold of us readers, the spooky reality of the afterlife... all of those and more take place in a detailed and lush world. It is such a beautiful comic and story. But the beauty of it because of the talent ShoobaQueen has but also because of the story itself. The majority of the comic takes place in a forest. We the readers are treated with lovely trees, shrubs, plant life, breathtaking backgrounds, spooky night scenes... it made me feel as if this story could be simply changed into an animated cartoon. Shades, shadows, textures - they all pull you in!
The writing and story telling goes on a few different paths - but all in good faith! There is humor at times, which enjoyable since Hammy is such a sweet boy to read along about. But some of the time I would laugh out loud at how goofy things became. Then there are the heartbreaking moments (I don't want to give any spoilers here) that truly pull on your heartstrings. Times where as I read I felt my eyes tearing up and I felt for the cast of characters going through some truly awful moments. ShoobaQueen adds some mystery of the afterlife. I've always been interested in the afterlife and other's views on the matter. With "Dead Life", it's an ongoing adventure for Hammy as we learn along with him what this all means. One of my favorite things is seeing the world through Hammy's eyes. The innocence of a child like our little hero in this dark new unknown makes it a special sort of story.
"Dead Life" has excellent pacing. It's not a complicated read to understand what is happening, the panels and pages are easy to keep up with. And the cast isn't large or confusing either. There is a simple cast page that I discovered while working on this review! So far there are three chapters to enjoy, the third just starting a bit ago. Already this fantastic series has a good number of fans, which makes sense. I feel it has captured many different readers in the comic fury world, give it a try today - it just may capture your immigration and curiosity too!
