https://gildaandmeekandtheuniverse.blogspot.com/2020/02/welcome-to-gilda-and-meek-and-un-iverse.html

Finally after a good bit of time I have completed the series "Gilda & Meek" by Matt Zimmer, also known as "The uncomix universe of Gilda & Meek!"! This series has been quite the adventure - from the good, the bad, the moments of joy to the moments of complete horror. The characters in this creative and witty story line truly come to life. As I started "Gilda & Meek" I wasn't sure what I was getting into. But right off the back I could tell it has something that is hard to find in stories and comics at times - it has passion. Matt started with Gilda, who he created while he was in first grade and it just grew from there.

The art is something some people may not enjoy. But you know what? I did. I felt like the art is original and fits for the story at hand. It may not be perfect, it may not win any awards but it will stay with you. It fits for what is going down. They are drawn in a simple but familiar art style. I can't quite put my finger on it but it sort of brings me back to my childhood and cartoons if that makes any sense. The characters are raw, fresh and deep and for that mixed in with the realistic writing and dialogue plus the bits from the narrator - we the readers get quite the treat. I haven't read a comic with such a combination at all and for that is another reason why this series stands out among web comics out there. It proves to keep things sane and us readers level headed as we wittiness some weird and at times chaotic things go down in this strange and wonderous world. The story takes us all over the place - from flashbacks many years ago, to space, to storylines that connect in lose but strong ways with the current plot
- the story doesn't get old or spoil. Matt's writing is the strongest part of "Gilda & Meek".

As the story unwinds and the plot gets darker and deeper I felt more and more for this cast of characters. Their personalities are vastly different from each other - from the kind hearted Meek to his little sassy sister Bernadette, to the innocent piranha to intelligent Julius to the brave Gilda - they all play such an important role with each other as friends and a grown family. Then we have the villains who are a whole mix of emotions and personalities! I think the cast of characters is one of the best parts of this series. The characters still stay with me. And as I took breaks from reading I would think about them during different parts of the day. The struggles they go through, what makes them tick and have character development all felt real to me in a way I can't honestly describe. Even the characters I didn't like or respect much *cough*Mayor Vic Puff*cough* made an impression - even if it was one of the most corrupted villains out there.

Matt also is here on Dreamwidth where he writes about his story and the madness and beauty behind it: https://matt-zimmer.dreamwidth.org/ He also writes about other topics which you may enjoy.

I'm on my third read through. Taking a bit of a break at the moment though. It's my personal favourite webcomic.

Thanks so much, Jess! The art is very old-school, reminiscent of comic strips from the 1980s. Since no current comics look like that anymore, it's why the comic looks and feels different.

Attagirl, Jess! MAJOR congrats on completing the entire saga! I jumped on a little late back in 2023; it seems you and Jasper have completed the saga, which admittedly leaves me a bit guilty at not having finished my first go around. But I remain committed to more than one read-through, as a saga is best experienced more than once.

I find Matt's art style to work wonderfully in tandem with his exceptional narrative skills. And I do mean exceptional; he manages to evoke such a wide breadth of emotions and pathos, all while moving the plot forward at a comfortable pace, allowing for the reader to soak up the details while envisioning the overall endgame. And Matt's art style is adorable to boot; characters like Gilda, Bernadette, and the Piranha have a general cuteness about them, and in the prequel arc "The Pontue Legacy", I often found myself enamored with the romance between Blessed Child Zyle and Princess Sarah -- the way that Matt writes their budding love for each other had me saying to myself over and over "Man, Zyle's got it SO good."

I also have to admit that "Gilda And Meek" is one of the few things that pulled me through 2024, arguably the most difficult year of my life with me losing five very dear people close to me through the span of the year. Reading each episode (especially when I got to The Pontue Legacy) gave me the much needed reprieve and uplifting to pull me away from the emotionally draining personal losses I had to take in. The uniqueness of the webcomic and how it pushed me to look at many things from a new angle is why I coined my praise-phrase to describe "Gilda And Meek" summarily: "Gilda And Meek and the Un-Iverse is a webcomic so unlike any I have ever read."

Matt's stellar writing and adorable art shows that it IS possible to make a comic with cute characters and a deep enriching plot WITHOUT needing a publisher's "blessing" or "endorsement", which is sadly something sorely missing in the floundering comic book industry these days.

Thanks, Nana! You are the best!

Also should point out Jess has NOT completed the entire saga! She's just completed Gilda And Meek, essentially the first HALF of the saga! I haven't even completed the entire saga yet! Still 22 more issues to put to paper! Busy, busy, busy!
