I've also only adopted senior pets since being an adult. I've been very fortunate that while they were undesirable for being over 10 years old, they've all given me very long and rewarding lives, albeit shorter than i've wanted. I adopted a deceased friend's 18 year old cat and I only got a year, maybe a year and a half with him but he was a delight.
I found a hoya rope plant in my dumpster one day. It didn't look /great/ but it didn't look bad either. I couldnt stand to see something living discarded like that. I brought it in and it is just thriving.
I usually spare bugs, but on occasion I do have to kill them and I still feel badly about it.
