"Ikon" has many elements in it that I wasn't expecting in one comic series! It's a pleasant surprise! I'm 4 chapters in this interesting tale that is inspired by Judeo-Christian Book of Tobit, the book Comrade Criminal by Stephen Handelman, Balto-Slavic pagan mythology, and the movies Брат and Брат II.
This is a bit of a heavy one, so without too many warnings I want to let you know this series has: crime, violence, death, the afterlife, witchcraft, the mafia, art smuggling and mythology (among some other dark themed goodies). All of the darkness that surrounds the characters of "Ikon" make it all the more appealing, in my honest option. Here we meet Aleks, who is a counterfeiter in order to make enough money to support his parents. He gets caught up with the mafia who he works for. And then we also have quite another character named Azariah who is an undead psychopomp (someone who conducts souls to the afterlife). He wants to reconnect with his adoptive, troubled son. These two find each other through an art smuggler that eventually will lead them to go on a dangerous trip through eastern Europe through Russia, Ukraine to Hungry. If that isn't a plot to get your attention and curiosity going, I don't know what will!

MissElaney's art shines brightly throughout. Everything from the buildings to the characters is all realistic. It's colorful and has a certain charm to it. As I read throughout the series I loved seeing tiny details like shadows and light in different scenes. They experiment with different angles that give you different perspectives on the scenes. How MissElaney illustrates all sorts of creatures from crows to other magical species is quite impressive, from the details of their fur, feathers, horns and claws - it is all beautiful in it's own haunting way. I have to note that I loved the crows in this story, having them come around was a fun perk.

One minor note that got me interested in this series to start with was finding out it has a hard of hearing character in it. This is the first web comic that has discussed and introduced a character with HOH. Some of you may know that about me, but I have been HOH since I was born and having it in movies, shows, books, ect. is few and far between. But the attention and thought behind it in "Ikon" with this character is like nothing I would have experienced. As others talk the words inside the speech bubbles blur and smear. And it visually represents how it feels in real situations. Getting frustrated, anxious and upset by not being able to hear what is going around you is a feeling that is hard to express, but MissElaney got it done perfectly. I found this touching and an important addition to the already fantastic story that "Ikon" is. I highly recommend this series, like I said earlier there are 4 chapters to enjoy and binge. Give it a try, I'm sure you will see why it is as popular as it is!
