Now I've read some dark web comics here on Comic Fury. Of all kinds. Different stories, graphic art, disturbing characters and suspenseful plots but "Acid Box" by Aneeway is on a completely different level. From the start we find a child who is locked up in a closed off room with a smiley face mask on. Their small wrists are chained to the wall behind them. And blood spattered on them. This red blood stands out because the comic is mainly done in black and white. No words are said until we get to the third page. It is horribly haunting and terrifying in ways that stay with you. Because my thought was - 'whoever is behind that smiley face mask, they can't be smiling on the other side of it'. This is the start to a deep, mysterious and dark web comic that isn't for the faint of heart.
Soon enough we get to meet some of who feel like the main characters of this story. Rilah, Hannibal, Honey and the mysterious child (who later gets a name but I don't like to give away too many spoilers with these!). They have their own stories, struggles and face tough choices throughout their lives which we get to follow along. There were times when this comic took so many twists and turns it stayed with me long after I read it. Wondering what would become of everyone until I got the time to dive back into reading.
Aneeway's art style is something I would call original with a comforting character design to it in this troubling world. The black and white colors really give it a certain feel. Then when there is action, noise or something similar we get color! And boy, it really stands out after experiencing it all in black and white. So many details are added in, with the backgrounds being very descriptive and at times it feels like you are right along with them. Action scenes are felt with force, heartbreaking moments are felt with such emotion and the violence is very realistic. There is this dream that one of the characters experiences and I felt so invested to what was happening, it pulled me into the story and dream he was experiencing like very few comics have before. That speaks volumes to me of the level of story writing and illustrations Aneeway created for us to enjoy.
This reminds me I should have put in these reviews before, but this comic is flagged with Violence, gore, sexual situations and frequent strong language. So keep that in mind if those things bother you. (I'm learning as I go along with these reviews!)
So if you are looking for something original, dark, suspenseful and action packed as well as heartbreaking at times you should give "Acid Box" a try. You may turn out to like it as much as I did! It's well worth a try!
