The Friday Five for 13 December 2024

These questions were suggested by quiregrrl.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I had a mix of jobs I was interested in when I was a kid. I think the two popular ones in my head were to become a Veterinary and the other to become an art teacher.

2. Did you follow through? If not, what happened?
Nope, not in the slightest. I lost interest mostly is what it came down to.

3. Is your life turning out the way you thought it would when you were a kid? If not, is it better or worse?
I didn't think too much of what my adult years would be like as a kid. Or at least I don't remember thinking of it much. So I'm not totally sure how to answer that...

4. Paradoxes aside, if you could time-travel back to when you were 10 years old, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?
To stay away from men who take advantage of you. Don't do stuff you aren't okay with to make them happy or for them to feel good. And to not believe them. To believe in yourself more. I know 10 years old is a bit dramatic for all of this talk, but really that advice would have helped me so much just seven/eight years later.

5. Do you think the child you were, would like the adult you've become?
I think so? Overall maybe? I think I live a pretty comfortable life. Sometimes I deal with loneliness and anxiety and depression, but overall I am okay.

I wanted to be a cartoonist as a little kid. I created Gilda and Meek in the first grade (although Gilda used to be known as Love). I am living my dream.

There are embarrassing stories about Gilda's previous two names. I chose not to share them, not only because they are embarrassing. But knowing they exist (and not knowing what they are) adds to the mystique of what I'm doing.

In the sequel to Gilda And Meek And The Un-Iverse, called The Supplements, The Un-Iverse's version of God declares about how he created the Universe, "The foundation of all things was Love." And it's better for that line's ambiguity if I keep much of the history there to myself.

I think that's really good advice. I think it would be great for girls generally to hear stuff like that at a young age.
